While automation and robotics can expedite many processes, there are also some skill sets that robots and automation just don’t have. This is why people with specialized skill sets will be necessary as technology continues to evolve in the supply chain.

We thought it would be valuable to look at some of the skill sets that will be required as automation and robotics continues to grow in our industry.

Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

Problem solving and critical thinking skills are two things that robots currently cannot replicate. The ability to identify relationships between two concepts and to predict a potential problem before it arises is something that is currently out of the reach of AI. It takes a human mind to be able to develop creative solutions and workarounds to potential problems.

People can also make interpretations and predictions based on a set of data. While robots are great at capturing data, they lack the capacity to take that complex data and turn it into actionable information.

People Management and Coordination

Robots have many applications, but they cannot manage workers. While they are great at data collection and complex mathematical algorithms, there are a number of limitations when it comes to managing people and coordinating staff activity.

Effective communication and collaboration are essential to creating a good work culture, having an effective workflow, and maximizing output. As technology continues to be implemented into the supply chain, management and leadership with these skills will be in top demand.

Negotiation and Cognitive Flexibility

There will always be a need for team members who possess the ability to effectively negotiate and accommodate various scenarios. The ability to negotiate and create win-win situations for all involved is a skill that is necessary for companies to survive. Also, the ability for these individuals to switch between different personas and communication styles is necessary for communicating the value proposition of working with your team.
