Preparing the Supply Chain for a COVID-19 Vaccine

There has been lots of talk lately of a COVID-19 vaccine that could hit the market in the next few weeks or months. While the world must wait on several different organizations that are working to create an effective vaccine, supply chains can start prepping now.

A Chilling Challenge

One of the primary considerations with shipping vaccines is that many must be stored in temperature-controlled containers. In fact, one of the leading vaccines must be stored at -94 degrees Fahrenheit (-70 degrees Celsius). This makes transportation a bit more complicated.

Refrigerated cargo is not new. However, it does limit the ways that these items can be transported. Shipping a vaccine across state lines is very different than attempting to ship to the other side of the world.

Domestic shipping will need to rely on air and ground transport options, and routes will need to be determined carefully. If your organization is not using the most up-to-date maps and route optimization software, now is the time to upgrade.

Security Woes

Unfortunately, cargo theft is not new to supply chains. Even in the best of times, products and even full containers can go missing if not carefully tracked.

With the release of a COVID-19 vaccine, however, this pattern may get even worse. The pandemic has brought out the best and worst in much of humanity, which means there may be those who wish to stockpile illegally obtained vaccines and sell them at their own prices.

If your supply chain may be involved with the transportation of an upcoming vaccine, take the time now to examine your transport procedures. Ensure any truck drivers are aware not to stop within the first 200 miles of their journey. This is called the “red zone,” and it is where many thieves take the opportunity to steal cargo. Review this concept and your safety procedures with your supply chain now so you’re prepared when the time comes.
