Celebrating at a Distance

Dec 10, 2020International Logistics, Supply Chain Management, TOC Team

This year has been difficult for many reasons, one being the lack of time spent with friends and family. However, as logistics professionals, we know exactly how small the world really is, especially in the age of technology.

Despite everything this year has thrown at us, our team is looking forward to celebrating at a distance with our loved ones this month. Here are some of our tips for how to spend time together, even when physically apart.

Check In

In logistics, we hover over our email inboxes and voicemails constantly, always waiting for the next update on where a shipment is. With all this time spent on our devices, we suggest taking a moment to send a message not to a business partner, but to a loved one.

2020 has been incredibly difficult for many people around the world. Who has been on your mind? Try to reach out to someone you haven’t spoken with in a while and simply ask, “How are you?” If it’s someone you’ve talked to recently, try, “Are you doing okay?” These simple phrases can help us all feel connected, even when halfway around the world.

Video Calls for Good

By this point, we’ve all grown so accustomed to video calls that they’re essentially second nature. Why not use your video skills with your friends or family? Hold a contest with who can compile the best costume for the call or try to see who can find the funniest background. You could also have a watch party and all watch the same film or show together and then debrief with one another after.

If you spend time on the phone or texting friends or relatives, suggest a video call instead. Seeing each other’s smiling faces can help melt the loneliness and stress that this year has brought.

Make Time

This is easier said than done. Supply chains don’t stop, after all, and logistics are always changing. Still, at TOC, we make it a point to honor time off for our team so they can spend time recharging and catching up with family.

If you can’t take time off, or if you’re always on call, try connecting with other team members. Offer to hover over their phone line for an hour outside of traditional work hours while they talk to their loved ones. Then they can return the favor for you.

Schedules are hectic right now, so if you can’t seem to find time to touch base, try adding it to your calendar. Treat it like a work event and be sure to show up on time. It’s easy to procrastinate when it comes to calling grandma, but it’s harder to put off a work engagement until the next day. Try treating them the same!

Our team is built on a family-centered set of values. That means we encourage all of TOC to make time for those who matter most. If you’re stressed this year, try some of our tips. If you don’t have anyone to reach out to, get in touch with us. We’d love to get to know you and share some holiday cheer.
