Transportation Disruptions in Germany

Jan 8, 2024Market Advisory

We at TOC Logistics a ProTrans company, are committed to providing you with timely and accurate information regarding factors that may impact your logistics and supply chain operations. We wish to inform you of ongoing strikes and protests in Germany that are expected to cause substantial transportation delays and disruptions this week.

General Strikes and Nationwide Protests:

Truckers and farmers have spearheaded a week-long general strike and widespread protests across Germany. The primary grievances driving these actions are the proposed agricultural subsidy cuts and the termination of certain tax benefits causing a fear of bankruptcy for many. As a result of these demonstrations, major highways and roads have been obstructed by tractors, leading to extensive traffic congestion. Notable blockages have been reported in key locations such as Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, as well as in regions like Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, and Bavaria.

Rail Strike Announcement:

Adding to the transportation challenges, the Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) has declared a strike affecting both cargo and passenger rail services. This industrial action arises from unresolved wage disputes with Deutsche Bahn (DBM.UL), Germany’s principal rail operator. The timeline for the rail strike is as follows:

  • Cargo Trains: The strike is scheduled to commence on January 9th.
  • Passenger Services: The disruption will begin on January 10th and continue through January 12th.

While the term “unlimited” has been used to describe the strike, industry experts do not anticipate the strike lasting more than five consecutive days.

Impact and Recommendations:

Given the dual disruptions in road and rail transportation, we anticipate substantial challenges in Germany’s transportation networks in the coming days. Delays in shipments and deliveries are inevitable.

To navigate these challenges, we urge our partners to be patient and flexible. Some strategies to consider:

  • Stay Informed: Continuously monitor updates regarding the strikes and protests.
  • Plan Ahead: Consider potential delays in your scheduling and adjust timelines accordingly.
  • Alternative Solutions: Explore alternative transportation routes and modes where feasible.
